THERAPEUTIC SURGERY
Therapeutic laser procedures
Different sort of laser procedures are utilized in ophthalmology to gain therapeutic advantages.
The YAG laser is the laser used to clear the frosting from the back surface of an intraocular lens. YAG laser treatment is painless and is completed from outside the eye in a few minutes. During YAG laser treatment your eye doctor may use a magnifying contact lens to help with aiming the YAG laser at the layer of frosting. During the treatment patients will see flashes of light and hear a clicking sound. The pupil needs to be dilated before YAG laser can be performed to allow a good view of the lens surface.
Argon laser therapy is commonly used to treat diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion and retinal tears. The retina is a delicate tissue lining the inside of the eye and the macula is a small area at the centre of the retina. The macula is responsible for detailed vision such as reading, writing and colour vision. During the treatment a therapeutic laser beam is focused on the back of the eye. This beam of light is absorbed by the retina. This is used to seal leaking retinal blood vessels in diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusions and to seal retinal tears.
AntiVEGF treatment
This treatment involves having an injection into your eye to treat certain retinal conditions, such as wet macular degeneration, that cause abnormal blood vessels to grow and leak under the retina. Patients with these conditions can lose central vision when abnormal blood vessels bleed under the retina at the back of the eye. A series of injections of anti-VEGF medicines are given into the back of your eye to stop these blood vessels growing and help control the leaking blood. This treatment is highly effective in preserving central vision in many people. The pathological conditions which can benefit from this treatment include:
- Wet age-related macular degeneration
- Diabetic retinal changes
- Myopic choroidal neovascularization
- Any other retinal conditions that causes fluid to leak under the retina .
